Emperor Franz Josef I reigned as Austro-Hungarian monarch from 1848 until his death in 1916, by which time the Austro-Hungarian empire was fast crumbling.

Indeed by the time of his passing he knew that Austria-Hungary's fate was almost certainly doomed. With the war lost two years later - with Karl I as Emperor - the empire rapidly dissolved.
