The Western Front Today - Hunter's Cemetery
Updated - Sunday, 8 September, 2002

The tiny Hunter's cemetery is situated within the Newfoundland Beaumont-Hamel Memorial Park.  The circular cemetery - with headstones running around the base of the wall and sited on a former shell hole - contains 46 burials chiefly of men from the Black Watch (51st Highland Division) who fell during the Somme Offensive in the autumn of 1916.

The 51st Division Monument is sited directly behind the cemetery.  Also nearby is 'Y' Ravine cemetery.

A howitzer is any short cannon that delivers its shells in a high trajectory. The word is derived from an old German word for "catapult".
