It wiped out ten million people heralded the birth of modern warfare and engendered mass destruction on a scale never before known in human history. Dubbed "the war to end all wars" it was directly responsible for the outbreak of fresh international conflict barely twenty years later. Yet in terms of intelligent contemporary examination World War I is constantly placed second behind World War II.
As the last veterans pass away this definitive ten-part series offers insight and analysis to provide a coherent and strategic military narrative. Based on new and authoritative accounts this stylistically innovative series from acclaimed documentary filmmaker Jonathan Lewis (Before Hindsight Stalin People's Century) places World War I in its proper global context and explodes conventional myths with the human tragedy placed into a wider political and military context beyond the Western Front.
Episodes include: To Arms, Under the Eagle, Global War, Jihad, Shackled To A Corpse, Breaking the Deadlock, Blockade Revolution, Germany's Last Gamble and War Without End.

Thomas BerringerAs a World War I buff, I have a fantasy of time travel becoming possible someday, and I would then travel back in time to see World War I for myself. That's not going to happen, but this video is the next best thing. The DVD really brings World War I so close that I felt as if I were actually standing there by the side of the road watching the soldiers march by.hours watching this DVD. You won't be sorry. |
Edward ZwikThis is one of most comprehensive documentaries period, of an historical event, especially a war. I am a relatively serious student of history and this is not only the best WWI documentary but I'll add there is no documentary on WWII that even comes close. I know that is going to be hard for some people to believe because we think we know more about WWII than we actually do. Anyway to quote George Orwell A+ double good. |
Russia mobilised 12 million men during the war; France 8.4 million; Britain 8.9 million; Germany 11 million; Austria-Hungary 7.8 million; Italy 5.6 million; and the USA 4.3 million.
