News of the declaration of war, much anticipated in Germany, brought enthusiastic scenes to the streets of Berlin.  The public was not at this stage daunted by the onset of war against multiple major European foes - Russia, France and Britain - and readily anticipated a short war which would result in overwhelming German victory.

"Wipers" was the British nickname for the Belgian town Ypres.
