Connaught cemetery, sited on the Somme battlefield and directly in front of Thiepval Wood (locally known as Anthuille Wood), was established towards the end of 1916. After the war it was greatly expanded and the graves from ten other cemeteries concentrated at Connaught. The cemetery now contains around 1,200 burials. Virtually all were killed during the 1916 Battle of the Somme and half the graves are unknown; in many cases the unit of killed men is also unknown. Nearby is Mill Road cemetery. References:
