Who's Who: Peter Vasic
Updated - Sunday, 19 May, 2002

Peter Vasic (1862-1931) served as a Serbian field commander during the First World War and assisted in his country's eventual liberation.

When Austria-Hungary declared war with Serbia on 28 July 1914 Vasic was a Colonel in the Serbian Army.  During the course of 1915 he led a force in successful resistance to Austria-Hungary's mismanaged invasion of Serbia.

During the defence of Monastir from September-November 1916 Vasic was given a corps command operating under Zivojin Misic.  He subsequently made a significant contribution during the Second Battle of the Vardar during September-October 1918, the result of which was not only the jubilant liberation of Serbia but also the demolition of Bulgaria to the point of her defeat.

Vasic died in 1931.

By 1918 the percentage of women to men working in Britain had risen to 37% from 24% at the start of the war.
